Scholarships are free, so why take out a loan if you can get a scholarship? Without life skills such as cooking, sewing up damaged clothes, laundry, budgeting and general handyman ability the student will find that Government scholarships and grants are too small to survive.
I personally saved money on my scholarship while my classmates were struggling to make ends meet, just because I had enough life skills to allow me to thrive on a low income.
Admittedly I added to my savings by taking on holiday jobs such as Christmas Postman, Harvest Hand, Fruit Picker, Lambing Shepherd, Tractor Driver etc. but the scholarship was all I really needed – the rest was just putting jam on it!
